Raqayraqayniyuq, San Jerónimo – Cusco

Raqayraqayniyuq, San Jerónimo – Cusco

As mentioned in my last post about Silkinchani, San Jerónimo never ceases to amaze and amuse us. This time we ventured into Raqayraqayniyuq due to a friend’s recommendation. Despite the fact that I am a Cusco citizen, I’d never heard about this place before, and probably many Cusco citizens neither.

So, join us to discover Raqayraqayniyuq and its surroundings to subsequently make it your next adventure destination in Cusco.

Raqayraqayniyuq is a Pre-Incan and Incan archaeological site located in the Cusco district of San Jerónimo, at 3525 m.a.s.l. and at approximately eleven kilometres from the city centre.

As always, we relatively left early in the morning and started walking from a famous local market every local knows as Vinocanchon. We followed a path to the east that didn’t take us directly to Raqayraqayniyuq but allowed us to enjoy the surroundings of this marvellous place.

After an hour and a half of walking, we arrived at the entrance of Raqayraqayniyuq and were received by a kind guard who gave us orientation and explained to us a little bit about the site, its history and its relation to the communities nearby.

Despite the beauty of its cultural heritage, one is also amazed by the beauty of its surroundings, full of vegetation and a breathtaking view of the wonderful Cusco city.

After that, our adventurous spirit guided us to follow a path into the forest to find out what else we were able to discover.

We had lunch in the middle of the forest and found a road that would lead us to the entrance of the community of Picol-Orccopucyo. A sign was highlighted prohibiting access to outsiders.

All in all, finding this place was totally worth it. A perfect place to escape from the routine, breathe fresh air and connect with nature, our ancestors, and overall ourselves. What are you waiting for knowing it?

When returning I was wondering what other destination we could reach next time. By watching to the east we devised the imposing Apu Pachatusan, and asked ourselves, why not? who wants to join us in this adventure?
