Apu Senqa

Apu Senqa

Imagine yourself watching the entire Cusco city, the extensive plain of Anta, the Andes and its highest mountains, the beautiful scenery of lakes, rivers and forests in the region, and the skyline at its best. In addition, imagine yourself walking in the darkness in the middle of an unknown place, feeling the uncertainty of what to find ahead. Isn’t all of that incredible? Certainly, a wholly unique experience.

Apu Senqa

is located to the northwest of Cusco city and its summit is at approximately 4423 m.a.s.l being one of the highest mountains surrounding the valley of Cusco.

We started our journey by departing from the Arco Tica Tica neighbourhood and followed the path that some months ago took us to Apukunaq Tianan, an artistic monument carved in rocks. After having walked some metres we found a detour that would take us to Senqa mountain.

On the way up

one is delighted by the unique landscape of the area and the fresh air. Reaching the summit, the path becomes somehow tough but then one is taken aback by the beauty of this ancestral viewpoint. We couldn’t be more grateful for this magical place. The entire trek took us approximately three hours.

As mentioned in the previous video,

Apu Mama Simona is almost at the same altitude, at approximately 4136 m.a.s.l. and is clearly visible from this point. We could also devise the lakes Piuray and Huaypo as well as the mountains, Ausangate in the southeast and Veronica and Salkantay in the northwest, and part of the mountain range of the Sacred Valley.

On the way down,

we dared to take another route that would take us to ‘El Balcón Del Diablo’ or ‘Devil’s Balcony‘ which is a fascinating rock formation with a high peculiar cave that overlooks a river that runs underneath the rock. We didn’t know how to get there, but still, we ventured ourselves.

In the end, the night had fallen down on us and we couldn’t see the Devil’s Balcony, in fact, nothing around. However, we were witnesses to a beautiful colourful sunset and pretty much enjoyed the uncertainty of finding ourselves in the middle of an unknown place. Some metres down we found Sacsayhuaman and also the colonial aqueduct of the already famous Sapantiana.

With this in mind,

one is amazed by the beauty that every place can bring with it. The Apu Senqa and its breathtaking viewpoint will certainly provide you with indescribable energy that will encourage you to venture into new routes like the one we had. Have you ever heard of ‘Centro Poblado Sancantay’? If not, you should consider taking this route on your next adventure in Cusco.
